Contract engineering · For software teams · Remote

Another experienced engineer, for a stretch.

For software teams with more work than people. Each task is quoted before I start, built in your codebase with your tools, and reviewed by your team.

How it works

Small, defined tasks first.

A few weeks of clear tasks is the honest way to find out if we work well together.

A call about the work

Your codebase, your stack, and the first few tasks worth handing off.

Before I start

A quote for each task

What gets done, what done means, and one price. Changes get their own quote.

As it ships

Reviewed, then invoiced

Pull requests your team reviews before they ship. Invoiced as tasks are delivered.

If it's working for both of us after a few weeks, we can make it an ongoing role.

AI-first

Faster with AI, and careful with it.

I build with AI coding tools every day, so defined tasks get done faster. The guardrails come first.

  • Only the tools you approve. We agree which AI tools can see your code and data before I start. If you handle sensitive records, that comes first.
  • A person owns every change. AI drafts, I check and test it, and your team reviews it before it ships.
  • Code that fits yours. Your conventions, your tests and your review process, not a style of my own.
Contract questions

Before you ask.

Anything else, put it in the form below. I read every message myself.

Fixed price or hourly?

Defined tasks get a fixed price up front, so you know the cost before I start. Anything outside a quote is hourly, at a rate we agree in writing.

Who owns the code?

You do. What I build for you is yours. I keep only the tools and code I made before or outside our work.

Contractor or employee?

Contractor. You contract with Varholdt AI LLC, under your agreement or mine.

What do you work in?

Modern web stacks, and AI features inside them: document processing, search that answers with sources, agents. Tell me your stack on the form. If it isn't a fit, I'll say so before we start.

What have you shipped?

Eight production systems, including a federal document parser. Public Parish, a live open-source app for Louisiana local government. And Atlas Outbound, an AI research agent that won first place at the Convex Modern Stack Hackathon.

Contract work

Tell me about your team and the work.

I reply within two business days. If a call makes sense, we'll take 30 minutes to go through the codebase and the first tasks.

A few sentences is plenty.
